Getting to the Bahamas is straightforward, with major international airports across the islands. Most visitors from the US can reach the Bahamas via direct flights from cities like Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Atlanta, and New York. International travellers can connect through these hubs or fly directly from select global airports.

Upon arrival, inter-island flights and ferries make it easy to reach even the more remote fishing destinations. Each island has its own transportation options, and many fishing operators offer airport transfers upon request.

Fly fishing in the Bahamas is a year-round pursuit, thanks to the islands’ warm climate. However, understanding the best seasons for each species will enhance your fishing experience.

Bonefish: The Bahamas is synonymous with bonefishing. Peak months are October through June, with March and April being prime times. Bonefish frequent shallow flats, making them perfect for sight fishing. They are known for their speed and powerful runs.

Permit: Permit fishing is most productive from April to August, though they can be caught year-round. These elusive fish prefer deeper flats and are famously challenging due to their keen eyesight and selective feeding habits.

Tarpon: Best targeted from May to September, particularly in the northern islands. Tarpon, known for their acrobatic leaps and immense strength, inhabit channels and deeper waters.

Barracuda, Jacks, and Sharks: Available year-round, these species provide thrilling battles. Barracuda are aggressive and powerful, while jacks offer relentless fights, and sharks add an exhilarating edge to any trip.

Fly fishing in the Bahamas is defined by its crystal-clear waters, vast sand flats, and abundant marine life. Anglers engage in sight fishing, where spotting and casting to fish in shallow water is both challenging and rewarding. Local guides play a vital role by navigating the flats, spotting fish, and offering expert advice.
